SDG ACTIVITY : ROUTE TO ROOTS

  • TRANSFORMING  MENTALITIES

Action For Equality Programme with Schools to Reconstruct Norms of Masculinity and Define Alternatives

Background:

Gender discrimination and violence is one of the greatest challenges to equitable growth and development across the world. India’s track record on international indices and polls that monitor the same doesn’t paint a positive picture either.

In order to achieve gender equality, we must stop regarding men and boys as perpetrators and instead, create spaces for them to understand and reflect on the influence of patriarchal gender norms on themselves, their actions and their behaviours.

The UNESCO-led Global initiative on “Engaging Men and Boys for Gender Equality” considers the fluid notion of masculinity as an opportunity to develop a positive discourse towards men, masculinities and gender equality. It envisions men and boys as active partners and agents of change. Through a constructive and reflexive process, it aims to address unequal power relations and deep-rooted beliefs of patriarchy and masculinities.

Engaging men and boys to transform these rigid and socially validated versions of masculinities into fluid and gender equitable manifestations is crucial for achieving SDG 5, especially during unprecedented times.

In partnership with the Equal Community Foundation, UNESCO invites schools to participate in this programme which will comprise of a series of training webinars (for educators) consisting of 10 sessions, approximately 2 hours each (delivered in a combination of English and Hindi). Educators will be responsible for delivering these sessions to groups of adolescent boys in their schools.

Outputs:

  • A structured gender transformative curriculum that will be disseminated to the schools through the training. The curriculum will help build the capacities of the teachers to engage boys in open discussions on gender and create safe spaces for boys to reflect on and take action against gender-based violence.
  • Create a cadre of teachers as Master Trainers to support in training of other educators/teachers and eventually the students, and act as resource persons during the implementation of the programme.
  • Participating educators will receive certification from UNESCO and the Equal Community Foundation upon completion of the training programme.

“The individualization of learning fundamentally redefines the role of
assessment.”- Sebastian Thru

In the most challenging times across the globe, the real challenge, for us, was to find ways to stay connected. The online classes initiated by the school have been a refuge for all involved in the pursuit of Education. It has been a new learning experience for both the teacher and the students. Riding high on our successful completion of almost two months of virtual classes, we believe, it is time to assess our own efforts. There is no denying the fact that the school faculty has left no
stone unturned in making the reel lessons educative, interactive and virtually attractive. Assessment is the key to gauge appropriate learning. The twist in the tale is the feedback that we seek not for the students’ learningbut for our teachers’ online lessons curated to continue academic enrichment. As the school invites feedback for the classes, we only strive to improve our own strategies and advance the efficacy of the lessons. A Google feedback form was designed to evaluate the nuances of these online classes and the same was duly filled by the students for their subject teachers on 13 May 2020. To further the cause of learning, BBPS Rohini planned a Student Led Conference on 23 May 2020, Saturday at 11:30 am for Class X.To discuss the students concerns and observations surfaced in feedback forms, the school planned yet another Student Led Conference on 8 June 2020, Monday at 10:30 am for Class XII. The students of class X and XII logged in their respective meetings for an evaluative interaction with the Principal and the subject teachers.

“In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about Life - IT GOES ON”
Robert Frost

As we all settled down to the life under Lockdown, we retrospect how different life was few weeks ago. Going back in time, we clearly remember how excitedly the school was getting itself readied for the new session 2020-21. The teachers were awaiting their children geared with galore of activities and strategies for another year of learning. As we were zealously engaged in incorporating latest innovations, organizing Teachers Training etc, we had no premonition that our continuous and consistent IT engagements will turn out be our biggest blessing during Lockdown times. While closing down the school, our foremost thoughts were for our children who will be confined to four walls of their homes. They will be safe but they will be home bound. What will happen to their learning? How will they cope with such difficult times? How can we all ensure that these challenging times do not impact the learning and also, the lives of our children? At this juncture, the IT innovations and interventions came out as a boon to us. BBPS, Rohini is proud of the fact that it has developed its Digital prowess with able guidance and support from Tech Council, Child Education Society. With the kind patronage of visionaries in CES, hard work of teachers and support from parents, we were able to draft our Online teaching Plan along with logistics, behaviour protocol, schedules etc in a very short span of time. At this juncture, I would like to put in words of appreciation for the effort and hours that the teachers have invested in adapting their entire teaching learning process onto digital platform. It is as much a learning experience for teachers as it is for children. With their passion & diligence, teachers have been able to overcome the initial challenges faced by them while using Google Classroom & Hangout Meets for middle & senior Children .Online learning is in progress for all classes from PS to class XII through sharing of learning resources, online assignments, quizzes,
podcasts, videos etc.
